Hammer Toes

-
Hammer toes are toes that are bent or contracted and are no longer straight in appearance. They can be caused by tight shoes, muscle imbalance, or arthritis. They are usually flexible to start and may become rigid. The toe usually rubs against the top of the shoe and causes irritation of the skin with corn formation. Conservative treatment may consist of custom made orthotics and shoes that match the shape of the individual foot. If conservative treatment fails, surgical correction may be necessary. The Doctors at Northern Illinois Podiatry will advise you of your treatment options and get you started on the way to healthy comfortable feet.

Fractures and Sprains

-
Injuries to bone, joints and ligaments are very common whether related to sports, work, or leisure activities. Acute trauma arising from sports related injuries, accidental falls, work related injuries, or car accidents usually require immediate attention. Injuries may also be subliminal in nature with the trauma being cumulative. This type of injury today has been called the overuse syndrome. If left untreated, this often painful nagging condition may result in stress fractures and long term disability. Northern Illinois Podiatry has the diagnostic equipment to make an accurate assessment of the problem and the experience and the expertise to treat your condition and to get you back on the road to recovery

Children

-
Many adult foot disorders could have been prevented if the child was examined and properly treated in childhood. Shoes with good heel counters, shank support, and arch support are mandatory. The shoes also must conform to the shape of the foot. Custom made orthotics or shoe pads may be necessary in order to place the foot into proper anatomical alignment and therefore allow the foot to function in a normal manner. Proper anatomical alignment allows the muscles to function with least resistance and prevents overloading of the joints and abnormal stretching of the ligaments. Proper anatomical alignment prevents muscle imbalance and resulting deformities later in life. Surgical correction may be necessary for treatment of sever deformity if symptoms persist and conservative management fails.
